Pilot Phase

Testing phase- Completed
We have mapped about a thousand trees in one area of Ahmedabad, i.e. Bodakdev. This was done with Google maps and it was possible to see information on each tree and also filter for a particular species of trees. For final map, Open Street Maps or OSM has been identified as the best base.

Mapping Pilot zone

In this pilot phase all street trees of one area of 5sqkm will be mapped, which means approx 20,000 trees. A team of 2 people is required in which one has knowledge about trees and one person to assist in the measurements. After the ground survey, the data will be required to be put on the open street map with photos & info of each tree.

Equipment to be used: 2 Garmin GPS and inclinometers for two teams

As per Gujarat forest department, tree density in Ahmedabad is 60 trees/ha. Assuming 1/3rd on streets, there are 20 trees/ha. So 5sqkm (500ha) will have 10,000 trees. Assuming 40 trees are mapped per day per team, it will take 120 days to survey 5sqkm for two teams. Digitization for 5sqkm area should take 1 month.

Subsequent Phases

Subsequent phases of 5 sqkm will be taken up as the project progresses. It should take about 40 phases to cover entire 200 sqkm core area of Ahmedabad.

Once the data is mapped, most important trees will be identified as per categorization (rare, heritage etc). We will approach the local authorities to mark them and raise awareness. We will make a priority map of sequence of plantation on roads, based on density and frequency.

Mapping Guidelines

Basic set of guidelines for surveying followed:

  • All trees of more than 5 years of age to be mapped only. No dead tree or saplings will be mapped.

  • All trees which are mapped should have minimum girth of 10cm. Girth will be measured at breast height aka GBH. This will vary from 1 to 1.2m from ground.

  • All species will be mapped, wether invasive or not. Exception is for Subabools, only those of this species will be mapped which have girth more than 15cm
